Managing Service Providers
by Christopher A. Duncan

In July of 1989, Risk Management Reports published “Managing Service Provider Relationships.” At that time, I was a consultant for Tillinghast-Towers Perrin, working for Felix Kloman and Assistant Editor of RMR. The article was written in response to requests for assistance by risk managers in managing their service provider relationships, primarily their relationships with insurance brokers. Well received, this particular RMR edition has been one of the most popular for re-prints even though it is somewhat dated. Since that time, while many things have changed in risk management, much has stayed the same, such as risk managers’ desire to understand how to manage service providers effectively. I too have changed, leaving the consulting world and putting into practice what I preached as the director of risk management at KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) and Frito-Lay. This update of “Managing Service Providers” reflects the changes that have occurred in the industry during the years, as well as additional insights from my experiences. It also incorporates many of the best practices, from other, wiser, risk professionals, that I have absorbed over the years, for which attribution to all risk professionals is given!
